Successfully Leading The New Generations
Leaders and managers today are desperately searching for ways to fit the incoming workforce into the existing workplace and have them follow protocol and perform as expected.
The problem: New generations have little interest in playing that game. They operate by a completely different set of rules sustained by deeply held core values that are sharply divergent from the values of previous generations and from workplace expectations.
Though the ideals of youth mature over time, core values never change. To get the best from the emerging workforce and meet organizational goals, the focus must shift from trying to change the people – to changing the game. The small, incremental changes that once worked no longer get the desired results. And it’s unlikely they ever will. The values and mindset of newer generations are not creating a mere ripple – they are driving a tidal wave that’s bringing with it a global power shift unlike any in recorded history.
Power Shift prepares leaders and managers to ride that wave successfully. It provides an in-depth examination of the factors leading to this great shift and the awareness, insights and tools for harnessing the energy and talents of the new workforce. This book presents models of companies that have embraced the new rules of engagement and experienced unprecedented growth and profits as a result. And it lays out a blueprint leaders can use to influence the direction of the inevitable power shift and ensure that their organization not only survives, but thrives
The ideas and strategies outlined in Power Shift are indispensable to leaders and managers today and into the future.
An essential clarion call for leaders, managers
Wow, where has this book been? It is an essential clarion call for leaders, managers, and anyone at all who spends any time with people of another generation. In easily accessible language and concepts, it provides new, clear insights and practical ways to be most successful as an individual and at an organizational level and make the most of the future that is upon us.
Applying the book to my management style I was able to make dramatic improvements in the team
The team that I am responsible for managing ranges in age from 23-70. It is a dynamic environment that sometimes involves life and death issues. Prior to reading the Power Shift book and using the techniques in the book I thought my team was performing the best I could expect. After about three months and with some trial and error of applying the book to my management style I was able to make dramatic improvements in the team. We now have significantly less repeat training and have had no additional disciplinary action.

Power Shift provided some very unique insights and strategies on how Baby Boomers have to shift their approach to leadership if they are going to stay relevant in business. The section on Structured Freedom was especially insightful in terms of where most organizational cultures need to evolve to in order to better tap into the energy and commitment of younger workers. A must read for those interested in taking their leadership skills and capabilities to the next level.

We live in extraordinary times when breakthrough ideas and innovation are absolutely essential. They demonstrate that a “Leadership of Understanding” and the tools that support it, is now the leadership model that will lead to inspiration and performance of each generation. There are many books on leadership, personality styles and generational difference in the workplace. Finding one book that covers it all in a seamless fashon, supported by research and brought to life with engaging stories is a rare find. This book is that rare find. Sherry Buffington, Ph.D. and Marc Schwartz have a positve view (and an accurate one, in my opinion) of the newer generations, not just the “older” ones. They highlight the strengths, discuss the weaknessesof each generation and give excellent advice for influencing all generations to do their best work and to live their best lives.
The chapter on “Getting the Best From People” is worth the price of the entire book but you will want what’s in ther rest of the book. This book isn’t just for leaders and managers. It’s for anyone who wants to understand themselve and others better and who wants to understand human behavior and performance and how to influence self and others more effectively.

The team that I am responsible for managing range in age from 23-65. It is a dynamic environment that sometimes involves life and death issues. Prior to reading the Power Shift book and using the techniques in the book I thought my team was performing the best I could expect. I was using tools and ideas from management books and training I had received in the past and still had a team with a lot of disciplinary and training issues. They often needed reminders and follow up and did not seem very happy or engaged. After about three months and with some trial and error of applying the book to my management style I was able to make dramatic improvements in the team. We now have significantly less repeat training and disciplinary action. Most importantly the team works to help each other, is happier, more productive, less stressed. In turn this also allows me as a manger to have less stress and I am able to successfully manage my team and exceed company goals.

It explains how divergent Millennial values are affecting organizations, large and small, around the globe, and why employee engagement remains persistently low in spite of continual efforts to improve it.
Learn why traditional leadership models are not working and why it is critically important for leaders and managers to learn a more effective model now so they are able to motive Millennials, influence the direction in which power flows, and help shape the businesses of the future

With Power Shift, Dr. Sherry Buffington and Marc Schwartz have laid out an excellent how-to manual for leadership in the 21st century.
The book is positioned as a guide for leading the emerging Millennial generation, but it could just as easily have been written as a guide for leadership period. The authors go beyond mere advocacy and offer many practical insights and practices that you can implement right away. I am an executive coach with 25 years of experience, and still gained several insights I have already started using with my clients. The model for authentic leadership fits perfectly into the principles of Conscious Leadership which is one of the 4 key pillars of Conscious Capitalism. The “8 Myths of Leadership” are some of the most cogent arguments I have read for transforming the predominant hierarchical and directive style of management. I highly recommend this book!

As an executive in the hospitality industry, I employ over 500 team members, many of them millennials, but also gen-x and baby-boomers. In a competitive staffing environment we strive to continue to improve and adapt our management, recruiting and compensation packages to appeal to and especially motivate and retain our diverse staff base. Power Shift is an intriguing “how-to” manual, giving us valuable (and relevant) insight into each “type” of team member. Understanding perception of leadership and environment from the point of view of a millennial compared to gen-x or baby-boomer was incredibly eye-opening. I truly enjoyed the book, especially the easy writing style (doesn’t read like a textbook), the case studies and the build-up to the final chapter on Systems for Success.
